A Boone County man has been arrested after allegedly assaulting a woman in her driveway, while looking for another individual.
According to the probable cause affidavit, on July 9, the Boone County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a physical disturbance along Hudson Road. Upon arrival, the victim told deputies she had just returned home when she stepped out of her car and the suspect, 35-year-old Adam Vandergrift, was standing beside her.
The victim told authorities she was on the phone with her fiancé when Vandergrift took her phone out of her hand and asked where an individual was. When she told him she did not know who the person was, Vandergrift allegedly began punching the victim in the face and ribcage. She told deputies she felt trapped and unable to get away from Vandergrift. She stated he would ask her random questions and punch and kick her whenever she gave a “wrong” answer.
The victim stated Vandergrift allegedly grabbed her by the back of the head and slammed it into the inside door panel. She advised deputies she was able to close the car door and attempted to run to her neighbor’s house when she fell, and Vandergrift caught up to her. Vandergrift then allegedly got on top of her and began to punch her in the face and back of the head, along with kicking her in the ribs. The victim stated she curled into a fetal position and screamed for help, and Vandergrift picked up a stick and started hitting her with it. She said he was able to hit Vandergrift in his private area, but it only made him madder.
The victim’s neighbor came out of her home and began screaming for Vandergrift to stop when he ran toward her. At that time, the victim got up and ran to her house to call 911.
The victim sustained swelling on both cheeks, a knot on the back of her head, abrasions to her left arm, a small cut on her left calf and bruising to her lower back. She stated it “felt like she was going to die because she could not get away from Vandergrift to call for help.” She was taken to the hospital for treatment of her injuries.
Vandergrift faces one felony count of second-degree battery and a misdemeanor charge of second-degree interference with emergency communication. He is in the Boone County Detention Center on $10,000 cash bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 15.
