A Boone County man faces charges after video surveillance showed him removing a catalytic converter from a farm vehicle.

According to the probable cause affidavit, on June 8, the Boone County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a theft from the victim’s farm. The victim stated he had a video of a man on his property using a sawzall to remove a catalytic converter from a refrigeration service truck.

The victim stated he did not discover the theft of the converter until May 31 when taking the vehicle to be licensed. Video provided to deputies showed 50-year-old Jimmy Bagby had come onto the property and picked up a broken sawzall blade he recovered from under the vehicle. Before leaving the property, Bagby was observed dropping something into the back of his truck which appeared to be the converter.

During an online search, deputies found Bagby had sold a convert to Meyers Recycling the same day as the theft. According to the ticket, the converter he sold allegedly belonged to an SUV registered to a couple from Harrison. Deputies spoke with the owner, who stated an individual cut off his converter in March 2022.

Bagby is facing a felony count of theft of property and criminal mischief and a misdemeanor charge of criminal trespass. He was released from the Boone County Detention Center on $5,000 bond.
